Contestants typically lose over 100 pounds each, drastically transforming themselves both outside and within. So it must be an equally large shock to discover that despite their time and dedication to healthy living, for most participants, the weight eventually comes back. With a vengeance. A study looking at the show’s participants six years after the show ended found that participants bodies’ were burning about 500 fewer calories per day than others of similar age and weight who had not gone on the diet. What this and many other studies show is that extreme dieting is not an effective way to maintain healthy weight loss.
