Photos of toxic algae taking over Florida’s usually pristine beaches have stunned the nation. A thick, bright green alga pours over water and structures, wreaking environmental havoc. At this point, the toxic algae problem is apparently so vast that the shockingly hued sludge can be seen from space. Worse, the cause of the toxic algae sounds like something from a science fiction film—toxic water is flowing through waterways until it reaches the ocean. Once there, the combination of saltwater with the freshwater creates stunning toxic algae growth.
