Few people regularly follow the time-tested adage, ‘early to bed, early to rise.’ While this may be a well-intended goal, it is not a reality for most Americans. Many of us stay up far too late on a regular basis, with the glow of our smartphones, televisions, and laptops shining in our faces. This unnatural light interferes with the body’s nightly release of melatonin, making it difficult for the body to calm down and prepare for sleep. Instead of hitting the pillow and drifting off to sleep, we are often left tossing and turning, looking at the clock at regular intervals and becoming more and more frustrated as yet another night passes by without enough shut-eye. Melatonin is just one of the hormones responsible for healthy sleep, and in fact, many different hormonal imbalances can lead to disrupted sleep and insomnia patterns.
