Maintaining Vaginal pH Levels and Why It’s Important

You may have heard that douching and using harsh soaps in your nether regions is never a good idea. This is because the vagina is an organ that is actually meant to be self-cleaning, which makes those extra steps not only unnecessary, but potentially harmful. The vagina has a delicate pH balance, and when this balance is thrown off, a variety of concerning symptoms can arise. Mild soaps are a better choice in the shower—the vagina is sensitive, and should be treated as such. Another potential irritant to the vagina is sweaty, tight-fitting clothes. After a vigorous workout, it’s a good idea to peel off those sweat-drenched clothes for clean, dry ones, because the bacteria that can accumulate can cause uncomfortable and sometimes prolonged infections. The clothes you choose to wear may also be important in terms of your vaginal health, as looser clothing allows your vagina to breathe, while tight-fitting clothing can inhibit air flow.
