Artificial sweeteners sound great in theory, which is why there is a near constant influx of new additions to the diet market. But have you ever stopped to wonder why an artificially created substance could be better than one found in nature? Sure, the promise of a low calorie or zero calorie product is great. Yet since their initial inception, artificial sweeteners have consistently been plagued with rumors of causing serious health issues. Saccharin, cyclamate, aspartame, and sucralose reign supreme on the market, but do you know what you’re really ingesting in your effort to lose weight? In the case of saccharin, at least, the sweet accident of a lab experiment involving a coal-tar derivative. Makes it sound a little less tasty, right?
